Why Is My Drain Backing Up?

Drain issues can happen gradually or all at once—but they all come down to one thing: a blockage is preventing water from flowing freely. Here are the most common causes:

A. Clogged Drain Line

Hair, soap, grease, food scraps, or even “flushable” wipes can collect over time, causing slow drains and backups. Most common in: bathroom sinks, showers, and kitchen drains

B. Main Sewer Line Blockage

If multiple drains are acting up at once, the problem is likely in your home’s main sewer line.
Caused by: tree roots, pipe collapse, or heavy buildup

C. Grease or Sludge Buildup

Grease hardens and sticks to the inside of your kitchen drain lines, slowly narrowing the flow.

D. Improper Slope or Old Pipes

Older systems made of cast iron or clay can sag or deteriorate, and poor slope means water—and waste—won’t drain properly.

How to Clear a Slow Drain DIY Tips!

Try these simple at-home fixes for minor clogs!

  • Use a sink-specific plunger (not the one for your toilet).

    • Create a tight seal and plunge forcefully

    • Test by running water afterward

  • Baking Soda & Vinegar

A fizzy chemical reaction that can break down buildup.

    • Pour ½ cup baking soda, followed by 1 cup vinegar

    • Let sit 15–30 minutes, then flush with hot water

  • Works well for grease and soap scum.

    • Pour a full kettle slowly down the drain

    • Wait a few minutes, then flush with hot tap water

    • Repeat if needed

  • Good for deeper clogs.

    • Feed the snake into the drain until resistance is felt

    • Twist and break up the clog, pull out debris

    • Flush with hot water
